Frequently Asked Questions
Who is it for?
People with facial redness, flushing, and visible capillaries consistent with erythematotelangiectatic or papulopustular rosacea. It is also suitable for post-acne redness. It is not a cure for rosacea but significantly reduces vascular symptoms. Phymatous or primarily ocular rosacea may need other modalities and medical care.
How does it work?
Narrow-band IPL targets hemoglobin in superficial vessels (telangiectasias). Through selective photothermolysis, light is absorbed by blood in the vessel, generating heat that collapses the vessel wall while sparing surrounding skin. This reduces background erythema, flushing frequency, and visible broken capillaries, and can down-regulate inflammatory mediators over a series of sessions.
How many sessions and how often?
Most patients benefit from 3–4 sessions spaced 3–4 weeks apart. Improvements in redness can appear after 1–2 sessions, with progressive clearing across the course. Maintenance 2–3 times per year (or as symptoms re-emerge) helps keep results stable.
What happens during a session?
Skin is cleansed, protective eyewear is provided, and a cooling gel is applied. The practitioner delivers a series of brief light pulses that feel like a warm elastic ‘snap’. Face treatments usually take 15–25 minutes. Afterward a soothing product and SPF are applied, and you can resume normal activities immediately.
Is there downtime or side effects?
Downtime is minimal. Temporary redness and mild swelling are common for a few hours. Less frequent effects include dryness, transient darkening of tiny vessels, or light crusting. Rare risks include hypo/hyperpigmentation or bruising—more likely with recent sun exposure or unsuitable parameters. Proper settings and sun protection mitigate these risks.
Who should avoid it or use extra caution?
Avoid treatment with recent tanning/self-tanner, active skin infections, open wounds, or if taking photosensitizing medications unless cleared by your clinician. Pregnancy/breastfeeding: usually deferred. Fitzpatrick V–VI may require modified settings and test spots. Always protect the eyes; periocular treatment is done only with strict shielding.
Can it be combined with other rosacea treatments?
Yes. It complements topicals (metronidazole, azelaic acid, ivermectin), alpha-agonists for redness (brimonidine/oxymetazoline), and when indicated, oral therapy (e.g., doxycycline). Space actives like retinoids 3–5 days before/after sessions. Gentle skincare, trigger management, and consistent SPF are essential co-factors.
How should I prepare and care after?
Before: avoid sun/solarium for 2 weeks, stop self-tanner 10–14 days, and pause acids/retinoids 3–5 days unless advised otherwise. Arrive with clean skin. After: use a gentle cleanser and moisturizer, apply SPF 50+ daily, avoid heat (sauna/hot yoga), alcohol, and very spicy foods for 24–48h, and reintroduce actives gradually.
