What it is: Body HIFU uses high-intensity focused ultrasound to controllably heat the deep layers of the skin and stimulate the production of new collagen.

What it's for: To improve mild to moderate body laxity and redensify areas where the skin has lost firmness, without incisions or downtime.

Results: Results are progressive and appear over the following weeks as collagen matures. Results may vary from person to person.

Who performs it: At Santé, it is indicated and applied by our medical team after an individual assessment of the area and the degree of laxity.

The firmness of body skin changes over time. After a certain age, and especially after weight loss, pregnancies, or periods of reduced activity, the skin of the abdomen, arms, or inner thighs can become looser. Body HIFU is one of the tools that aesthetic medicine offers to address this laxity non-invasively, working from within on the skin's support structure.

In this article, we calmly explain, without promising miracles, what body HIFU is, how it works, in which areas it makes sense, and what can realistically be expected.

What is Body HIFU

HIFU stands for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound. The technology concentrates ultrasound energy at very precise points located at different depths beneath the skin. At these points, controlled heat is generated, causing what we call punctual thermal coagulation: small areas of stimulation that the body repairs by producing new collagen and elastin.

Unlike treatments that act on the surface, HIFU reaches deep layers without damaging the visible epidermis. This allows it to work on firmness without injuring the visible skin and without requiring prolonged recovery.

How it acts on laxity

Laxity appears when the collagen and elastin network that supports the skin weakens. HIFU generates a thermal stimulus that initiates the tissue's natural repair response. In the following weeks, this response results in progressively denser, firmer, and more toned skin.

It is important to understand the nuance: HIFU firms and redensifies; it does not eliminate fat volume or replace weight loss. Nor is it a substitute for surgery when laxity is very pronounced. It is an option for mild to moderate laxity, or as a complement within a broader protocol.

Body areas where it is applied

  • Abdomen: one of the most requested areas, especially after pregnancies or weight changes.
  • Arms: the inner arm is prone to losing firmness with age.
  • Inner thighs and knees: areas where the skin tends to sag.
  • Flanks, buttocks, and submental area: to redefine contours.

In the consultation, we assess which areas are good candidates. Not all laxity responds equally, and part of our job is to honestly say when HIFU is the right option and when it should be combined or another alternative considered.

What to expect from the session and recovery

The session is performed in the clinic, and its duration depends on the area. During application, it is common to feel heat and small, punctual pricks when the energy reaches the deep layers; most people tolerate it well. It does not require general anesthesia or hospitalization.

One of the great advantages of HIFU is that it does not require you to stop your life. After the session, you can resume your routine normally. It is possible to feel the area slightly sensitive or somewhat red for a few hours, which usually subsides on its own.

Results are not immediate. Collagen needs time to form and mature, so improvement is seen gradually in the weeks that follow. Depending on each case, more than one session spaced over time may be recommended.

How we approach it at Santé

At Santé, we don't start with the device, but with the assessment. Our medical team examines the skin quality, the degree of laxity, and your goals to decide if body HIFU is the most suitable for you or if it makes sense to integrate it into a combined protocol with other body firming techniques. All treatments are performed by licensed medical professionals.

We attend in Spanish, English, Portuguese, and Russian at our clinic on Avenida Diagonal 384, in the Eixample of Barcelona. The initial consultation allows us to explain what is reasonable to expect in your case, without promises of guaranteed results.

Frequently asked questions

How much does body HIFU cost?

The price depends on the number of areas to be treated and the recommended protocol. Therefore, we always specify it after the medical assessment, where we define the appropriate plan for your case.

Is it safe?

Focused ultrasound is a technology with a well-established safety profile when applied by qualified medical personnel and after ruling out contraindications. During the assessment, we review your medical history to confirm that you are a good candidate.

Does it hurt and do I need rest?

During the session, heat and some punctual pricks may be felt, generally well tolerated. It usually does not require rest: most people resume their activity the same day.

When are the results visible?

Progressively, over the following weeks, as new collagen is generated. Results may vary depending on age, skin quality, and the degree of laxity of each person.
