When a new treatment arrives in aesthetic medicine, there are always two types of clinics: those that wait for the market to validate it, and those that, after studying it and finding scientific backing for the technique, adopt it before others. At Santé Clínica Estética, we have always been the latter.
Plasma gel fillers came onto our radar before they became popular in Spain. The concept was solid: use thermal activation of the patient's own plasma to create an injectable viscoelastic gel, combining the immediate effect of fillers with the regenerative biology of plasma. The problem was that the technique was not standardized, the learning curve was real, and results varied enormously depending on the preparation protocol.
We decided to invest time, training, and resources in developing our own protocols before offering the treatment to patients. That decision is what positioned us as a benchmark.
Why Plasma Gel Was a Medically Sound Bet
Hyaluronic acid fillers have been the standard in aesthetic medicine for decades. They are effective, safe, and relatively predictable. But they have known limitations: they are external materials, biocompatibility is high but not perfect, and they have no regenerative effect on the tissue into which they are injected. They are, in essence, a volume "patch."
Plasma gel elegantly addressed these limitations:
- 100% autologous: no risk of rejection, no external materials
- Perfect biocompatibility: the body recognizes plasma gel as its own because it is
- Regenerative effect: plasma contains growth factors that stimulate the regeneration of treated tissue
- Controllable viscoelasticity: with the right thermal activation protocol, the gel can be adjusted to the necessary consistency for each area
It was, and is, a real advance. The problem was the technique.
The Protocol Development
Plasma gel preparation requires precise control of several parameters:
- Centrifugation speed and time: determine which plasma fractions are concentrated and which are discarded
- Activation temperature: between 75° and 85°C, depending on the desired consistency
- Heat exposure time: too short and the gel is too liquid; too long and it becomes unmanageable
- Post-activation dilutions: to adjust the final viscosity according to the injection area
Our team carried out a technical development phase that included viscosity tests, evaluation of injectability in different anatomical planes, and analysis of tissue response in the first patients. It was a time-consuming process, but it allowed us to establish stable and reproducible protocols.
What We Learned by Being First
Pioneering a treatment teaches things that are not in any manual. We learned that:
- Individual plasma variability (different protein concentration, different behavior under heat) requires flexibility in the protocol, not rigidity
- The injection area matters: the correct anatomical plane is crucial for the distribution and duration of the gel
- Post-treatment management (patient instructions, follow-up at 48 hours and 4 weeks) is as important as the procedure itself
- The plasma gel results curve is different from that of hyaluronic acid: patient expectations about the timing of results must be managed
All this learning is now integrated into our protocols and into how we inform patients before treatment.
Why We Remain a Benchmark
Being first was the starting point. Remaining a benchmark is continuous work that at Santé is supported by:
