Pressotherapy: Mechanical Lymphatic Drainage for Light Legs and a Decongested Body

Pressotherapy is a mechanical lymphatic drainage treatment that improves circulation, reduces fluid retention, combats cellulite, and relieves the sensation of heavy legs.

Why the Lymphatic System Matters More Than You Think

The lymphatic system is one of the most overlooked aspects of body physiology — and one of the most important. Alongside the circulatory system, it manages the transport of metabolic waste, excess interstitial fluid, proteins, and immune cells. When it functions well, the body drains efficiently, and tissue remains uncongested. When lymphatic drainage fails or slows down, symptoms that many patients know well appear: heavy legs, fluid retention, swelling, cellulite, and body fatigue.

Pressotherapy is the most effective medical treatment to stimulate lymphatic drainage mechanically, systemically, and in a controlled manner.

What is Pressotherapy

Pressotherapy is a treatment that applies sequential and graduated pneumatic compression to the limbs (legs, arms) and, in some systems, to the abdomen. Through a suit or special boots connected to an air pump, chambers are progressively inflated — from distal to proximal — replicating the effect of manual lymphatic drainage but more uniformly, more precisely, and with the ability to treat large areas simultaneously.

The sequential compression movement:

  1. Pushes lymph from the most distal areas (feet, ankles) towards the proximal lymph nodes (groin, armpit)
  2. Stimulates the activity of lymphatic vessels: mechanical compression activates the rhythmic contraction of lymphatic collectors
  3. Reduces interstitial pressure: promotes the return of fluid accumulated in the tissues to the lymphatic circulation
  4. Improves venous circulation: the movement of fluids also has a positive effect on venous return

Benefits of Pressotherapy

Reduction of fluid retention

Fluid retention (peripheral edema, swollen legs) is the most immediate and visible benefit of pressotherapy. A single session produces a noticeable feeling of decompression and lightness, especially in people who spend many hours standing or sitting.

Improvement of cellulite

Cellulite (gynoid lipodystrophy) has a significant circulatory and lymphatic component: poor microcirculation and stagnant drainage worsen the appearance of orange peel skin. Pressotherapy improves drainage and microcirculation in areas with cellulite, complementing the effect of other body treatments.

Relief from the sensation of heavy legs

One of the most frequent reasons for consultation in summer: heavy, tired legs, with a tendency to swell at the end of the day. Pressotherapy acts directly on this sensation — patients often describe immediate improvement after the session.

Post-exercise and post-procedure recovery

Pressotherapy is also used for sports recovery: it accelerates the elimination of metabolites (lactic acid) after intense training and reduces muscle inflammation. Similarly, it is frequently used post-liposuction, post-body surgery, and post-localized fat reduction treatments (enzymes, cryolipolysis) to facilitate the elimination of lysed adipose tissue.

General improvement of circulation

Repeated stimulation of the lymphatic system has sustained effects on overall circulatory quality: better nutrient distribution, better toxin elimination, healthier tissue.

Who is Pressotherapy Indicated For?

Pressotherapy is especially suitable for:

  • People with chronic venous insufficiency or a tendency to heavy legs
  • Patients with lymphedema or at risk of lymphedema (always under medical supervision)
  • People with chronic fluid retention or frequent edema
  • Athletes in recovery after intense exertion
  • Patients undergoing treatment with lipolytic enzymes or cryolipolysis (accelerates the elimination of lysed fat)
  • Post-body surgical intervention (under surgeon's indication)
  • People with cellulite as part of a combined protocol
  • Pregnant patients with leg edema (consult with a doctor — specific indication)

Contraindications

Pressotherapy is contraindicated in:

  • Active or suspected deep vein thrombosis
  • Active infections in the limbs
  • Acute inflammatory processes
  • Tumors or metastases in the treatment area
  • Decompensated heart failure
  • Active thrombophlebitis

The doctor reviews the patient's history before treatment to confirm the indication.

How is a Pressotherapy Session at Santé?

The treatment is completely passive — the patient only needs to relax.

  1. The patient puts on the pressotherapy boots (and, depending on the protocol, the abdominal belt or arm sleeves)
  2. The device sequentially inflates and deflates the chambers from the feet towards the groin, simulating manual lymphatic drainage
  3. The pressure and sequence are adjusted according to the program prescribed by the doctor
  4. The session lasts between 30 and 45 minutes

The sensation is one of progressive and rhythmic compression — most patients describe it as very pleasant, even relaxing.

How Many Sessions and How Often?

For significant clinical results in fluid retention or cellulite:

  • Intensive protocol: 10 sessions, with a frequency of 3-5 sessions per week
  • Maintenance protocol: 1-2 sessions per week

For sports recovery or post-procedure:

  • 1-2 sessions in the days immediately following exercise or treatment

Results accumulate with the number of sessions: a single session provides immediate relief, but for lasting changes, a full cycle protocol is needed.

Pressotherapy in the Context of Santé's Body Protocols

At Santé, pressotherapy is not offered as an isolated treatment but integrated into body contouring and wellness protocols:

  • Cellulite protocol: pressotherapy + INDIBA + cryolipolysis or enzymes + manual massage
  • Post-lipolysis protocol: pressotherapy to accelerate the elimination of fat lysed by enzymes
  • Heavy legs protocol: pressotherapy + manual lymphatic drainage massage
  • Sports protocol: pressotherapy + cryotherapy or recovery massage

The doctor designs the specific protocol according to each patient's objective.

Pressotherapy vs. Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage: Which is Better?

It's not a comparison where one "wins." They are complementary treatments with distinct advantages:

  • Manual lymphatic drainage massage: greater precision in specific areas, can adapt to any body area, human touch has an additional relaxing effect
  • Pressotherapy: greater uniformity over large areas, greater consistency between sessions, more economical, the patient can relax completely while it works

At Santé, we can combine both techniques in the same protocol to maximize results.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will I notice results?

Relief from the sensation of heavy legs and fluid retention is noticeable from the first session. For visible improvements in cellulite or reduction of chronic edema, 8-10 sessions are needed.

Does pressotherapy help with weight loss?

Not directly. It reduces fluid retention, which can decrease leg volume, but it does not burn fat. For fat reduction, specific treatments (enzymes, cryolipolysis) are needed.

Can I have pressotherapy if I have varicose veins?

It depends on the type and degree of varicose veins. The doctor evaluates each case. For small varicose veins (spider veins), it is usually compatible; for large varicose veins with significant venous insufficiency, the indication is more cautious.

Can I have pressotherapy during pregnancy?

In some cases, the doctor may recommend it for pregnancy edema, but always with prior assessment and adjustment of parameters. It is not performed without medical consultation in this case.
