A defined jawline changes the whole face
The jawline is one of the structural pillars of the face. When it is well-defined — with sharp angles, a clean jawline, and a proportionate chin — the face projects youth, health, and facial harmony. When it loses definition — due to aging, volume loss, or simply because the bone architecture is more rounded — the facial oval blurs, and the face loses tension and presence.
Jawline contouring with hyaluronic acid is the most precise and effective aesthetic medicine treatment to define the angle and line of the jaw without surgery. At Santé Clínica Estética, we perform it with an advanced cannula technique, an approach that maximizes safety and the naturalness of the result.
What is jawline contouring
Jawline contouring is a technique involving the injection of high-density, highly cohesive hyaluronic acid into the supraperiosteal plane (over the mandibular bone) and, depending on the case, into the lateral subcutaneous tissue of the mandibular angle.
The objective is twofold:
- Structural: to add volume and projection to the mandibular angle (the most posterior point of the jaw, where the bone turns towards the vertical ramus), to define the difference between the neck and the jawline
- Contouring: to sculpt the line from the mandibular angle to the chin, creating a cleaner and more defined trajectory
The result is a more defined jawline, a more structured facial oval, and — in many patients — a “framing” effect on the face that makes all other features (eyes, nose, lips) appear better defined as well.
Who is it for?
Jawline contouring is indicated for:
- Young patients with naturally undefined mandibular architecture who want more facial structure
- Middle-aged patients who have lost mandibular definition due to the bone atrophy process associated with aging
- Men seeking a more massive and square result (masculinization)
- Women seeking a more defined jawline without a masculinizing result
- Patients with loss of facial oval tension who want to restore the distinction between face and neck
- Patients who have lost a lot of weight and have lost lateral facial definition
It is not suitable for patients with severe untreated active bruxism (masseter hypertrophy can affect the result), nor for those with expectations of architectural change that can only be achieved with orthognathic surgery.
The technique at Santé: cannula vs. needle
At Santé, we prefer the cannula technique for jawline contouring for reasons of safety and precision:
Vascular safety: the jaw is an area with vascular anatomy that requires respect. The blunt cannula does not puncture vessels — it simply pushes them aside — significantly reducing the risk of bruising and accidental intravascular injection.
More uniform distribution: the cannula allows the product to be distributed in a more controlled plane, preventing the formation of gel peaks that would give an irregular appearance.
Less post-treatment inflammation: less tissue trauma = less edema = the patient can see the real result more quickly.
In very specific areas for precise targeting (chin, very pronounced posterior angle), the doctor may combine cannula and fine needle.
Types of hyaluronic acid for the jawline
Not all hyaluronic acids are the same. For jawline contouring, we need:
- High density: for projection and structure
- High cohesivity: the gel must remain in the injection plane without dispersing
- High resistance to degradation: areas of high mobility (chewing, speaking) degrade hyaluronic acid faster
The reference products for this area belong to the range of high-viscosity structural fillers. The doctor selects the product according to the objective and the tissue characteristics of each patient.
What to expect from the result
Immediate: jawline contouring has a visible effect from the first moment. There may be some edema in the first 24-48 hours that slightly modifies the final result.
At 7-14 days: the edema has completely disappeared. This is the real result: a more defined jawline, a more structured facial oval, and — if the angles have been treated correctly — an improved 3/4 profile as well.
Duration: between 12 and 18 months depending on the exact injection area, the type of product, and the patient's chewing activity. Areas of high mobility (around the angle) tend to degrade somewhat faster.
Jawline contouring as part of a comprehensive facial plan
At Santé, we do not treat the jawline in isolation. The face is a whole, and jawline contouring works best when integrated into a facial harmonization plan that may include:
- Botulinum toxin in the masseter: for patients with masseter hypertrophy — reduces the volume of the lower part of the face and “elongates” the oval, complementing the angle definition
- Chin filler: chin projection to improve the lateral profile
- Malar filler: upper facial oval balance
- HIFU for double chin and neck: to tighten the tissue below the jawline
The doctor evaluates during the consultation whether isolated jawline contouring is sufficient or if the optimal result requires a combined approach.
The masculinizing vs. feminizing component
The jawline contouring technique varies depending on the desired result:
- In men: lateral projection of the angle, a square and wide jawline, and a squarer chin are sought. Slightly larger volumes are used, and the mandibular angle is worked horizontally.
- In women: definition without masculinization is sought. The jawline should be clean but the angle not excessively projected. The chin, if treated, is kept more oval.
The technical differentiation between these two objectives is one of the aspects where the doctor's experience makes the most difference in the result.
Frequently asked questions
How much product is needed?
Usually between 1 and 3 ml per side, depending on the degree of definition loss and the desired result. The doctor determines this during the assessment.
Does it hurt?
The area is locally anesthetized before injection. Most patients describe the treatment as well tolerable.
Can I go back to work the next day?
Generally, yes. There may be some edema and bruising in the first 48 hours, especially if activity is intense. If you have important social engagements, plan the treatment with some leeway.
Can it be combined with toxin in the masseter?
Yes. It is a very frequent combination and they work complementarily: the toxin reduces masseter volume and the contouring defines the angle. The doctor evaluates the appropriate order and timing.
Is hyaluronic acid in the jawline reversible?
Yes. Like all hyaluronic acid, it can be dissolved with hyaluronidase if the result is not as expected. This is an important safety advantage compared to other fillers.
