Main indication: mild to moderate skin laxity of the abdomen, common after pregnancies, weight changes, or with age.
How it works: focused ultrasound precisely heats the deep layers of the belly skin, stimulating new collagen to redensify it.
What it is not: it is not a method for losing abdominal fat nor a substitute for abdominoplasty when there is very marked laxity or muscle separation.
Recovery: no downtime required; you can resume your activities the same day. Results are progressive and may vary.
The abdomen is one of the areas where skin firmness loss is most noticeable. After pregnancy, weight loss, or simply over time, many people observe that their belly skin has lost tone and appears more lax, even if fat is under control. HIFU for the abdomen is an aesthetic medicine option to address this laxity without surgery.
Why Abdominal Skin Loses Firmness
The skin of the belly stretches and retracts throughout life. When these changes are intense — such as during pregnancy or significant weight loss — the collagen and elastin fibers that provide support can weaken and not fully regain their tension. The result is looser skin, sometimes with an “empty” appearance even if fat volume is normal.
HIFU does not act on fat: it acts on the quality and firmness of the skin, stimulating its natural ability to regenerate collagen.
How HIFU Works on the Abdomen
Focused ultrasound concentrates energy at precise points under the abdominal skin, at the appropriate depth for each case. This controlled heat generates a stimulus that the body repairs by producing new collagen and elastin. In the following weeks, the belly skin tends to appear progressively denser and more toned.
It is a deep cutaneous surface treatment, not a surgical procedure: there are no incisions or scars, and the epidermis is not damaged.
When it is the Right Option and When it is Not
Abdominal HIFU is suitable for mild to moderate laxity with good skin quality. It is not the solution when there is diastasis recti (separation of the abdominal muscles) or very severe laxity with significant excess skin: in these cases, the honest assessment is that HIFU will not achieve the desired objective, and other avenues should be considered. Part of our work in consultation is to distinguish between both scenarios.
It also does not replace healthy habits. If the primary goal is to reduce abdominal fat, the approach is different; HIFU addresses skin firmness, not volume.
The Session and Recovery
The session is performed in the clinic. During application, it is common to feel heat and small, sharp pricks when the energy reaches the deep layers. General anesthesia is not required. Afterwards, the area may be somewhat red or sensitive for a few hours.
There is no downtime: you can return to your routine the same day. Results appear gradually as collagen matures, and sometimes more than one session is recommended.
Our Approach at Santé
At Santé, we first assess the quality of your skin and the degree of laxity before proposing anything. Our medical team decides if HIFU is the most suitable for your abdomen or if it should be combined with other body firming techniques within a personalized protocol. All treatments are performed by licensed professionals.
We are located at Avenida Diagonal 384, in Barcelona's Eixample district, and we serve patients in Spanish, English, Portuguese, and Russian. The initial consultation helps us explain, without guaranteed promises, what results are reasonable to expect in your case.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does HIFU for the abdomen help lose belly fat?
No. HIFU tightens the skin; it does not eliminate fat or reduce abdominal circumference on its own. If your goal is localized fat, we assess that separately.
Can I do it after pregnancy?
It is advisable to wait until the body has recovered, and if you are breastfeeding, discuss it during the assessment. We review each case to confirm it's the right time.
Does it hurt?
You will feel heat and occasional pricks during the session, generally well tolerated. It usually does not require post-treatment rest.
When will I see results?
Progressively in the following weeks, as new collagen forms. Results may vary for each person.
