Summer is the season that dehydrates skin the most
Paradoxically, summer — the season when we think most about skin care — is also the one that attacks it the most. The combination of factors to which the skin is exposed between June and September is especially damaging to the water balance of the skin tissue:
- UV Radiation: UVA and UVB rays degrade endogenous hyaluronic acid, weaken the barrier function, and accelerate transepidermal water loss.
- Heat: high temperatures increase perspiration and accelerate water evaporation from the skin surface.
- Seawater and Pool Water: sea salt dehydrates the skin by osmosis; pool chlorine alters the skin microbiome and damages the protective lipid layer.
- Air Conditioning: very dry indoor environments continuously draw moisture from the skin.
- Abrupt Temperature Changes: repeated transitions between outdoor heat and AC cold stress the epidermal barrier.
The result: drier, tighter, duller, and more sensitive skin. In skin prone to hyperpigmentation, summer also accelerates the appearance of spots if not managed well.

Skin hydration occurs at two levels that require different strategies:
The Epidermis: Surface Hydration
The epidermis is the outermost layer of the skin. Its hydration depends on:
- The NMF (Natural Moisturizing Factor): a complex of amino acids, lactic acid, urea, and other molecules that retain water in corneocytes.
- The lipid layer (ceramides, fatty acids, cholesterol): acts as a barrier that slows water loss.
In summer, sun and chlorine damage both systems. The superficial solution is an adequate cosmetic routine: moisturizers with ceramides, low molecular weight hyaluronic acid, thermal waters, and daily SPF50+ photoprotection (photoprotection is the most powerful hydrating act in terms of preventing damage).
The Dermis: Deep Hydration
The dermis is where collagen, elastin, and endogenous hyaluronic acid reside. It is the layer that gives skin its firmness, elasticity, and natural "fullness." Dermal hydration cannot be achieved with topical products — hyaluronic acid molecules are too large to penetrate the epidermis.
The way to effectively hydrate the dermis is with intradermal medical treatments, specifically skinbooster (hyaluronic acid with high water affinity injected directly into the dermis).
How to Hydrate Skin in Summer: The Dual Approach
The most effective hydration plan for summer works at both levels:
Daily Cosmetic Routine (Epidermis)
Morning:
- Gentle cleansing (sulfate-free gel or foam)
- Light moisturizer or serum with low molecular weight hyaluronic acid
- SPF50+ UVA/UVB Sunscreen — essential, non-negotiable in summer
- Reapplication of sunscreen every 2 hours if there is direct sun exposure
Night:

Skinbooster: the reference treatment for dermal hydration. 2-3 sessions spaced 3-4 weeks, ideally starting in spring to enter summer with the dermis well prepared. Effects last 6-9 months.
Facial mesotherapy with vitamins and hyaluronic acid: a cocktail of active ingredients (vitamins C, E, B12, hyaluronic acid, amino acids) administered into the superficial dermis through microinjections. Especially indicated for dehydrated, dull skin or skin with signs of accumulated stress.
Gentle or enzymatic peeling: removes dead cells that prevent active ingredients from penetrating the epidermis effectively. In summer, very gentle peels are used (enzymatic or low concentration AHA) — never medium or deep peels with sun exposure.
The Role of Hyaluronic Acid: The Ultimate Hydrator
Hyaluronic acid is the most powerful hydrating molecule in human biology. A single molecule can retain up to 1,000 times its weight in water. Naturally present in the dermis, its concentration decreases with age and sun exposure.

Yes, there is no seasonal contraindication. It is advisable to avoid direct sun exposure in the treated area for 48-72 hours post-treatment.
Does oily skin also dehydrate in summer?
Yes. Oily skin produces more sebum but can still be dehydrated. Sebum is not water. Oily skin also needs hydration, with lighter textures (gel, serums).
What sunscreen do you recommend for summer?
