Glutathione is the most abundant antioxidant in the body: a tripeptide that the liver synthesizes from three amino acids. Administered intravenously within a vitamin drip, it reaches the bloodstream directly and supports antioxidant defense, energy and recovery. Results vary from person to person, and at Santé it is always administered after a medical assessment.
Key points
- Glutathione is a tripeptide (glutamate, cysteine and glycine) produced by the body itself, mainly in the liver.
- Intravenously, its bioavailability is immediate; taken orally, digestion reduces its absorption.
- The evidence supports its role as antioxidant and recovery support; there is no regulatory backing for using it as a depigmenting agent.
- At Santé it is administered within the SANTÉ Premium Drip (€250 per session) or a personalized Custom Drip, never as a standalone injection.
- Each session lasts between 30 and 60 minutes and is supervised by the medical team.
What is glutathione and why is it called the master antioxidant?
Glutathione is a molecule made up of three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine and glycine. It is present in virtually every cell, and the liver holds its highest concentrations.
Its main function is to neutralize free radicals and regenerate other antioxidants, such as vitamins C and E. That ability to recycle the rest of the antioxidant defenses is why it is called the master antioxidant.
Endogenous levels decline with age and with oxidative-stress factors: alcohol, insufficient sleep, pollution, very intense exercise or convalescence. That decline is the starting point of any replenishment protocol.
Real benefits: what the evidence supports
Antioxidant defense and recovery
When administered intravenously, glutathione bypasses the digestive tract and is immediately available in the blood. In clinical practice it is used as support during periods of fatigue, after long trips or in phases of intense physical load.
Energy and general well-being
Some people describe a feeling of greater vitality in the 24 to 72 hours following the session. This is a subjective perception: it is not a stimulant and results vary.
What the research says
A 6-month trial published in the European Journal of Nutrition (Richie et al., 2015) showed that 250-1,000 mg of daily oral glutathione raised body stores by 30% to 35%. The oral route works, but it is slow: hence the interest in the intravenous route.
Medical honesty requires us to point out that the evidence on intravenous glutathione in healthy people is still limited. Most of the data come from studies with oral supplementation or from deficiency situations. That is why we present it as support, never as a treatment for diseases.
Common myths about intravenous glutathione
Myth 1: it lightens the skin
No regulatory agency has approved injectable glutathione for skin lightening. The US FDA has expressly warned against depigmenting injectables due to their lack of evidence and their risks.
The FDA has warned that skin-lightening injectables, including glutathione, are not approved for that use and may contain impurities or unverified doses. At Santé, glutathione is not administered for depigmenting purposes.
For dark spots and melasma there are options with defined protocols: pigmentation IPL (€300), Q-Switched laser for melasma (€300) or medical peels such as the Hollywood peel (€150).
Myth 2: it detoxifies the liver in one session
The liver detoxifies continuously; glutathione takes part in the phase II conjugation of that process. A drip supports that function, but no single session erases the effects of habits.
Myth 3: more is better
The body regulates its levels and does not store surpluses indefinitely. Dose and frequency are medical decisions, not a quantity contest.
How is it administered within a vitamin drip?
At Santé, glutathione is not administered as a single dose: it is part of the SANTÉ Premium Drip or a Custom Drip designed after the medical assessment. Combining it with vitamin C makes biochemical sense, because vitamin C helps regenerate oxidized glutathione.
| SANTÉ Premium Drip component | Role in the formula |
|---|---|
| Glutathione | Main antioxidant in the formula |
| Vitamin C | Antioxidant cofactor; regenerates glutathione |
| B vitamin complex | Support for energy metabolism |
| Biotin | Nutrition for skin, hair and nails |
| Magnesium | Muscle and nerve function |
The session lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. It is performed through a peripheral line in the arm, in a dedicated room and under the supervision of the medical team; the price of the Premium Drip is €250 per session.
The difference with oral supplementation can be summarized as follows:
| Route | Bioavailability | Speed | Context of use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Oral | Reduced by digestion | Weeks or months | At-home supplementation |
| Intravenous (drip) | Direct to the bloodstream | Immediate | Medical supervision in clinic |

What you can expect and what cannot be promised
During the session you will feel the needle insertion and remain seated for 30 to 60 minutes. Afterwards you can resume your normal activity.
In the following 24 to 72 hours some people report more energy or a feeling of recovery; others do not notice an acute change, and both responses are normal. The result is assessed at follow-up, not in the first hour.
What cannot be promised: a depigmenting effect, immediate detoxification or an identical result in every patient. Results vary and no serious protocol guarantees them.
How Santé Clinics approaches it
Every IV therapy protocol at Santé begins with a medical assessment: clinical history, habits and goals. The IV therapy area is led by Dr. Alejandro Infante, and all treatments are performed by a team of licensed medical doctors.
Based on that assessment, a personalized protocol is defined: SANTÉ Premium Drip (€250), Fitness Drip (€250) or a Custom Drip adjusted to your needs, whose price varies with personalization. The aesthetic consultation is free and the two-week follow-up is included at no extra cost.
We see patients in Spanish, English, Portuguese and Russian, at Avenida Diagonal 384 (Barcelona).
Frequently asked questions
Does intravenous administration hurt?
Only the initial needle insertion, comparable to a blood test. During the infusion most people read or rest.
How many sessions are needed?
There is no single schedule: frequency is defined in the medical assessment according to your goals. As a reference within our IV therapies, NAD+ courses are usually planned in series of 4 to 6 sessions; for vitamin drips the schedule is individualized.
Does intravenous glutathione work for dark spots?
No. There is not enough evidence or regulatory approval for that use, and at Santé it is not indicated for that purpose. For pigmentation we offer IPL, Q-Switched laser and medical peels with defined protocols.
Can I take oral glutathione at home?
You can, but its absorption is limited and slow: the Richie study (2015) needed 6 months to raise body stores by 30% to 35%. The intravenous route avoids that digestive step.
Who is not a candidate for a drip?
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, active kidney or liver disease and known allergies to any component are common reasons for exclusion. The prior medical assessment exists precisely to decide this safely.
