Compression Boots: The Most Effective Pressotherapy Device for Legs

In the world of body wellness, sports recovery, and aesthetic medicine, compression boots have become one of the most valued therapeutic devices. Elite athletes, post-surgery patients, women with fluid retention, and people looking to treat cellulite use them for a simple reason: they work.

But what exactly are they, how do they work, and for what types of problems are they truly indicated? At Santé Clínica Estética, we integrate them into our body protocols. We'll explain it to you directly.

What Are Compression Boots

Compression boots are pneumatic pressotherapy devices that cover the lower limbs — usually from the foot to the thigh — and, connected to a compression unit, apply sequential and graded pressure to the legs.

The principle is simple: the device inflates and deflates chambers progressively, from the most distal to the most proximal areas (from the foot towards the groin), creating a mechanical "milking" effect that pushes lymph and venous blood towards the lymph nodes and the heart.

This movement artificially reproduces the effect of manual lymphatic drainage massage, but in a way that is:

  • More uniform and controlled (pressure is constant and graded)
  • Broader (works the entire limb simultaneously)
  • More reproducible (the same program produces the same effect in each session)
  • More comfortable for the patient (they can relax completely during the session)

How They Work: The Mechanics of Sequential Compression

Compression boots are divided into several independent chambers (usually 4-6 per leg). The compression cycle works as follows:

  1. First chamber (foot/ankle area): inflates to the programmed pressure
  2. Second chamber (calf area): inflates while the first maintains pressure
  3. Third chamber (shin/knee area): inflates sequentially
  4. Fourth and fifth chambers (thigh): complete the compression cycle
  5. Complete deflation: all chambers deflate, allowing reperfusion
  6. New cycle: the process repeats throughout the duration of the session

This sequential movement physically pushes lymph from the foot towards the inguinal lymph nodes, accelerating lymphatic and venous drainage in a quantifiable way.

What Compression Boots Are Used For

1. Relief from the sensation of heavy legs

This is the most well-known and immediate effect. People with chronic venous insufficiency, those who work long hours standing or sitting, or those with a constitutional tendency to fluid retention in their legs, feel noticeable relief after the first session. Legs feel "unloaded," the sensation of heaviness and pressure disappears, and the visible volume of the legs can be slightly reduced (due to the expulsion of accumulated fluid).

2. Reduction of edema and fluid retention

Pressotherapy with compression boots is one of the first-line treatments for:

  • Lymphedema (secondary to oncological surgery, for example) — always under medical supervision
  • Venous edema due to venous insufficiency
  • Gestational edema (under medical evaluation)
  • Post-surgical edema (liposuction, hip, knee surgery)

3. Sports recovery

Compression boots have become standard in the world of high-performance sports. After intense training or competitions, sequential compression:

  • Accelerates the elimination of lactic acid and other metabolic byproducts of exertion
  • Reduces muscle inflammation post-exertion
  • Improves oxygenation of muscle tissue (better circulation = more oxygen)
  • Reduces recovery time between training sessions

4. Cellulite treatment (in combined protocol)

Cellulite has a significant circulatory component: deficient microcirculation and stagnant lymphatic drainage worsen the appearance of orange peel skin. Compression boots improve this drainage and local circulation, complementing the effect of:

  • Cryolipolysis or lipolytic enzymes (for subcutaneous fat)

The Compression Boot Session at Santé

Before the session: the doctor or therapist confirms the indication and reviews possible contraindications. Pressure, compression mode, and duration are programmed according to the objective.

During the session: the patient puts on the boots (generally lying on a stretcher or in a semi-reclined position). The device inflates and deflates automatically following the program. The sensation is one of progressive massage — most patients find it very pleasant and relaxing.

Duration: between 30 and 45 minutes depending on the protocol.

Post-session: there is no recovery time. The patient can resume normal activities immediately. It is common to feel a sensation of lightness in the legs from the moment the session ends.

How Many Sessions and How Often

Difference Between Pressotherapy Compression Boots and Compression Stockings

This is a common confusion. Compression stockings (elastic) apply continuous static pressure. Pressotherapy boots apply dynamic and sequential pressure. The effects are complementary:

  • Compression stockings: for daily use, prevention of edema during work hours
  • Compression boots: for active drainage sessions, intensive recovery, treatment of established edema

In some protocols, both are combined — boots for clinic sessions and stockings for daily maintenance between sessions.

Contraindications

Compression boots are contraindicated in:

  • Active deep vein thrombosis
  • Active thrombophlebitis
  • Skin infections or open ulcers in the treatment area
  • Decompensated heart failure
  • Acute inflammatory processes in the limb
