Adults with sun-induced pigmentation such as solar lentigines (sun spots), age spots, freckles, and uneven tone from photoaging. It can also help selected cases of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) once inflammation has resolved. Note: melasma is a different condition with higher relapse risk and is better addressed with a dedicated melasma protocol.
Selective photothermolysis: IPL/laser wavelengths (often in the 515–570 nm range and Dye-type filters) are absorbed by melanin within pigmented lesions, converting light to heat to break up pigment while sparing surrounding tissue. The fragmented pigment then rises to the surface and sheds or is cleared by the body, revealing a more even complexion.
Many sun spots respond in 1–3 sessions spaced 3–4 weeks apart. Diffuse mottled pigmentation may need 3–4 sessions. Your plan varies by skin type, depth of pigment, and cumulative sun damage. Maintenance once or twice per year helps counter new sun-induced spots.
Expect dark spots to temporarily darken (coffee-ground look) over 2–5 days, then flake off within ~7–10 days on the face (longer on body). Tone becomes more even and skin looks brighter. Durability depends on sun exposure—consistent SPF and pigment-safe skincare extend results; without protection, new spots can form.
Downtime is minimal. Common, short-lived effects include redness, mild swelling, and transient darkening/crusting of treated spots. Less common: dryness, flaking, or temporary hyper/hypopigmentation—risk increases with recent tanning or aggressive settings. Rarely, blistering or bruising can occur. Test spots and appropriate parameters reduce risks.
Avoid if you are recently tanned or using self-tanner, have active infections/open wounds, photosensitive disorders, or have used isotretinoin recently (follow medical guidance). Photosensitizing medications require caution. Fitzpatrick IV–VI and darker skin tones need conservative settings and expert assessment to minimize PIH; a test spot is advisable.
Yes. Results are enhanced by pigment-safe topicals (vitamin C, azelaic acid, niacinamide, retinoids as tolerated) and diligent SPF. For mixed vascular/pigment lesions, combining with vascular IPL (e.g., Dye filters) can improve clarity. Gentle chemical peels may be alternated when appropriate. Your clinician will sequence treatments to minimize irritation.
Before: avoid sun/solarium for 2 weeks, stop self-tanner 10–14 days, and pause strong acids/retinoids 3–5 days unless advised otherwise. Arrive with clean skin. After: gentle cleanser + moisturizer, SPF 50+ with reapplication, avoid heat/sauna/intense exercise for 24–48 h, don’t pick at darkened spots, and reintroduce actives gradually (typically after 3–5 days).
