Plasma Gel Fillers: Natural Volume Without Synthetic Products
For years, hyaluronic acid has been the undisputed king of facial fillers. It is effective, predictable, and reversible. But it is also a laboratory-manufactured product that, session after session, accumulates in the patient's face.
More and more people are asking us the same question in consultation: is there a more natural way to fill? Today, the answer is plasma gel — an autologous filler, obtained from your own blood, which provides immediate volume and, in addition, regenerates tissue.
At Santé Clinics (Avenida Diagonal 384, Barcelona), we are one of the few clinics in Spain that offer this treatment, thanks to the specific technology we need to import to process plasma gel under safe clinical conditions.
What is a Plasma Gel Filler?
Plasma gel is obtained from your own blood plasma. After a simple extraction, the plasma is centrifuged and processed with controlled heat in a medical device, which transforms its proteins (especially albumin) into a stable gelled matrix.
The result: a substance with a consistency similar to that of a dermal filler, but with two fundamental differences compared to hyaluronic acid:
- It is 100% autologous. It comes from your own body. There is no synthetic material.
- It has active growth factors. It stimulates collagen, elastin, and cell repair while providing volume.
It is the first truly “biological” filler available in aesthetic medicine.
Why Seek an Alternative to Hyaluronic Acid?
Hyaluronic acid is an excellent material and will continue to be a central part of aesthetic medicine. But there are patient profiles for whom it has limitations:
- Patients who have developed nodules or delayed reactions to some filler brands.
- Patients with many accumulated sessions who no longer want to continue adding synthetic product to their face.
- Patients who prefer a biological approach and reject laboratory-manufactured products.
- Patients with very sensitive or reactive skin who seek to minimize any allergic risk.
- Patients whose previous fillers have migrated and prefer a more predictable and natural material.
For all of them, plasma gel offers a real alternative, not a substitute.
Key Differences: Plasma Gel vs Hyaluronic Acid
| Characteristic | Plasma Gel | Hyaluronic Acid |
|---|---|---|
| Origin | Your own blood | Biotechnological (laboratory) |
| Allergic risk | Practically null | Low, but exists |
| Provides volume | Yes | Yes |
| Stimulates collagen | Yes, actively | Indirectly |
| Resorption | 4–8 months | 6–18 months depending on product |
| Reversible with hyaluronidase | Not applicable | Yes |
| Long-term accumulation | No | Possible |
| Customization | Total (it's your plasma) | Limited to the product |
Both are valid treatments. The choice depends on the objective, the patient's profile, and the area to be treated.
For Which Areas is Plasma Gel Filler Used?
The main indications for plasma gel as a filler are:
- Soft or moderate nasolabial folds.
- Perioral lines and upper lip barcode lines.
- Cheeks, for a discreet and natural projection.
- Under-eye circles and tear troughs, in selected patients (it is ideal here because it does not generate the Tyndall effect that hyaluronic acid sometimes causes).
- Neck and décolletage, for volume and skin quality.
- Hands, where the loss of fatty tissue is one of the most evident signs of aging.
- Atrophic acne scars, combined with regenerative techniques.
It is not the ideal treatment for large volumetric changes (pronounced jawline definition, very marked cheek augmentation, chin). In these cases, high-density hyaluronic acid fillers or treatments like Sculptra and Radiesse are still more suitable.
What is a Plasma Gel Session Like at Santé?
- Free consultation. The doctor evaluates your face, your expectations, and reviews your medical history. If plasma gel is the right option, the session is planned.
- Blood extraction. A standard extraction, like for any blood test.
- Plasma processing. The plasma is centrifuged and processed in the plasma gel device. It takes a few minutes.
- Application. The doctor injects the gel with a fine needle or microcannula into the planned areas, under topical anesthesia.
- Recovery. Hardly noticeable. Minor redness or bruising that disappears within 24–72 hours.
The complete session lasts between 60 and 90 minutes.
Results: Natural and Progressive
- Day 1: visible volume, immediate effect.
- Week 2–4: improved skin quality (luminosity, firmness, texture).
- Month 2–3: optimal result, with established tissue regeneration.
- Month 4–8:s the gel volume is progressively reabsorbed, but the improvement in skin and collagen remains.
One of the most interesting peculiarities of plasma gel is that when the volume is reabsorbed, the skin looks better than before the treatment. This distinguishes it from conventional fillers.
Summarized Advantages
- 100% biocompatible. It's your own plasma.
- No risk of significant allergic reactions.
- Dual action: volume + regeneration.
- Natural appearance, very difficult to “read” as an aesthetic treatment.
- Ideal to combine with PRP, polynucleotides, mesotherapy, or energy-based treatments.
- No synthetic products accumulated in the face long-term.
Honest Limitations
- Shorter duration than some high-density hyaluronic acid fillers.
- Not reversible with hyaluronidase (because it is not hyaluronic acid). It is reabsorbable on its own.
- Not the best product for large volumetric changes.
- Requires blood extraction, which lengthens the session.
We always tell you clearly in the consultation: plasma gel is an excellent treatment, but it is not for all cases.
