Hands: The Area That Speaks Most About Your Age
There's a common saying in aesthetic medicine: “the face lies, the hands don't”. And it's absolutely true. A person may have taken care of their face for decades, undergone regular treatments, and maintained impeccable skin, but if you look down at their hands —the real age is there.
Hands suffer accelerated aging because they are constantly exposed: to sun, water, cold, cleaning products, and daily gestures. And yet, they are one of the areas we care for the least.
At Clínicas Santé, on Avenida Diagonal 384 in Barcelona, we are increasingly integrating hand rejuvenation into aesthetic medicine protocols. It makes perfect sense: if you're going to take care of your face, the contrast with your hands shouldn't be noticeable.
Why Do Hands Age So Quickly?
The skin on the back of the hands is very thin —much more so than on the face—. It has almost no subcutaneous fat, vessels and tendons are almost visible, and the accumulated ultraviolet radiation throughout life is very high.
The most common signs of aging in hands:
- Loss of volume and subcutaneous fat: bones and tendons become visible, veins become more prominent.
- Sun spots (lentigines) due to accumulated UV damage.
- Fine wrinkles on the back of the hand and knuckles.
- Papery skin, lacking hydration.
- Loss of smoothness and elasticity.
- “Paper-thin” skin due to reabsorption of subcutaneous tissue.
All of this can be very present even in patients with a young or very well-cared-for face.
Medical Treatments for Hands
Hand rejuvenation is not a single treatment, but a combined protocol that addresses the different signs of aging.
1. Mesotherapy with Vitamins
Mesotherapy with vitamins (superficial microinjections of a cocktail of vitamins, antioxidants, and non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid) is one of the basic treatments for the back of the hands. It provides deep hydration, reactivates fibroblasts, and visibly improves skin quality. Usual protocol: 3 sessions 3–4 weeks apart and maintenance every 4–6 months.
2. Skinboosters
Skinboosters (Profhilo, baby glow, Restylane Vital) are injectable hyaluronic acid designed to hydrate and improve elasticity. One or two sessions provide smoothness, radiance, and a qualitatively “fuller” back of the hand.
3. Fillers for Volume Restoration
When there is marked loss of subcutaneous fat and tendons and veins are very visible, specific fillers —hyaluronic acid or calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse)— can be injected to restore volume to the back of the hand. This is a technical treatment that must be performed by medical personnel experienced in the area.
4. Plasma Gel
Plasma gel, one of our most distinctive offerings at Santé, works very well on hands: it provides biological volume (from your own plasma) and stimulates skin regeneration, without introducing synthetic materials.
5. Sun Spot Treatment
For solar lentigines, we work with Q-Switched laser, IPL, or depigmenting peels. The protocol is designed according to the phototype and the severity of the spots.
6. Protection and Medical Cosmetics
The entire strategy is complemented by daily sun protection specifically for hands and, optionally, medical cosmetics with vitamin C, retinoids, or depigmenting agents as appropriate.
Indications
Hand rejuvenation is intended for:
- Patients with hands visibly more aged than the face.
- Papery, thin, dehydrated skin.
- Sun spots that give an aged appearance.
- Loss of volume with prominent tendons and veins.
- Patients who care for their face and want consistency with their hands.
- Before an important event where hands will be protagonists (wedding, announcement, photoshoot).
It is not indicated during pregnancy and lactation (relative depending on treatment), in active skin infections, or in known allergy to any of the products.
Expected Results
- After mesotherapy / skinbooster: visible hydration and radiance within 7–14 days, progressive improvement in 4–6 weeks.
- After volume filler: immediate effect, settling in 2 weeks, duration 9–18 months.
- After plasma gel: immediate volume and progressive improvement over weeks.
- After laser spot treatment: progressive lightening in 4–8 weeks depending on the protocol.
The usual approach is a combined phased plan: first skin quality, then volume if necessary, and in parallel, spot treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it very painful?
Hand treatments are very tolerable with topical anesthesia. Some patients report greater sensitivity than in the face during injections, but the session is short.
Are there marks or bruises afterwards?
Small hematomas and redness may appear for 1–3 days. The thin skin on the back of the hand is prone to minor bruising.
Can I work with my hands the next day?
Yes, with no special restrictions. It is recommended to avoid saunas, intense direct sun, and work with chemicals for the first 24–48 hours.
How long do the results last?
It depends on the treatment: mesotherapy 4–6 months per protocol, skinboosters 6–9 months, volume fillers 9–18 months.
Can I combine several treatments in the same session?
Sometimes yes. During the consultation, we design the order and spacing between treatments based on the patient.
Does it work at any age?
Yes. Protocols are adjusted to each case: for young hands, prevention and hydration; for mature hands, volume and spot recovery.
