Facial Mesotherapy: What It Is and Who It's For

Facial mesotherapy is a key aesthetic medicine technique to hydrate, brighten, and rejuvenate the skin. We explain what it involves and who it's for in Barcelona.

Facial Mesotherapy: The Star Treatment of Modern Aesthetic Medicine

Facial mesotherapy is, arguably, the most balanced treatment in all of aesthetic medicine: it provides visible results, requires little recovery, does not alter facial features, and adapts to practically any skin type and age. This is why it is one of the most demanded treatments, year after year, in leading clinics across Europe.

At Santé Clinics, located at Avenida Diagonal 384 in Barcelona, facial mesotherapy is a central part of our preventive and regenerative approach. We use it as a standalone treatment, as part of anti-aging protocols, and as maintenance between more intensive treatments.

What is Facial Mesotherapy?

Facial mesotherapy is a technique of very superficial microinjections, into the middle and superficial dermis, that infiltrate a personalized cocktail of active ingredients directly where the skin needs them. It was developed in France in the 1950s by Dr. Michel Pistor — in fact, “mesotherapy” literally means therapy of the mesodermis, the middle layer of the skin.

Unlike topical cosmetics, which only reach the epidermis, mesotherapy deposits active ingredients 1–4 mm deep, precisely where fibroblasts, capillary vessels, and the extracellular matrix are located. It is there that the youthfulness and radiance of your skin are determined.

What Does the Cocktail Contain?

The “cocktail” is what makes each mesotherapy treatment unique. It is designed during the consultation and, depending on the case, may include:

  • Non-cross-linked hyaluronic acid for deep hydration.
  • Vitamins (C, E, B group, A) with antioxidant and restorative effects.
  • Amino acids, precursors to collagen.
  • Coenzymes and minerals (zinc, selenium, magnesium…).
  • Specific antioxidants like glutathione.
  • Pigmentation regulating factors for skin with spots.

At Santé, we increasingly refer to it as “Facial Mesotherapy with Vitamins”, because we want patients to understand exactly what we are injecting: real nutrition for the skin, not a generic cosmetic product.

Mechanism of Action

Facial mesotherapy acts through two simultaneous pathways:

  1. Biochemical pathway: the infiltrated active ingredients nourish and hydrate the dermis, stimulate fibroblasts, and combat oxidative stress.
  2. Mechanical pathway: the microinjections themselves trigger a very mild skin repair response, which activates collagen production (a phenomenon known as percutaneous collagen induction).

The result is skin that is better hydrated, more radiant, with a finer texture, and, over time, firmer.

Indications: Who Is It For?

Facial mesotherapy is a very versatile treatment. The most common indications at Santé are:

  • Dehydrated skin, feeling tight or looking dry.
  • Dull skin lacking natural radiance.
  • Tired faces with a loss of freshness.
  • Anti-aging prevention from 25–30 years of age.
  • Mature skin as a complement to deeper anti-aging treatments.
  • Neck and décolleté with thin skin and early fine wrinkles.
  • Hands with loss of firmness.
  • After intense sun exposure (post-summer).
  • Before an important event to prepare the skin.

It is not indicated during pregnancy or breastfeeding, in patients with known allergies to any of the active ingredients, or on skin with active infection.

Who Is It Not The Best Option For?

Facial mesotherapy does not replace:

  • A facial filler when the problem is structural volume loss.
  • Botulinum toxin when there are pronounced dynamic wrinkles.
  • HIFU or radiofrequency when the priority is moderate to severe sagging.
  • A fractional laser or deep peel when there is significant sun damage or scars.

In these cases, it works very well combined with these treatments — in fact, it enhances them.

Expected Results

Mesotherapy is a cumulative and progressive treatment. A single session improves the skin, but the full effect is achieved with a protocol:

  • Session 1 (week 1): plumper, more hydrated skin in 24–48 hours.
  • Session 2 (3–4 weeks later): visible improvement in radiance and texture.
  • Session 3 (3–4 weeks later): firmness, softer fine lines, more even tone.

Maintenance sessions are scheduled every 3–6 months depending on the patient's age, skin condition, and habits.

What is the Session Like?

  1. Facial cleansing and application of anesthetic cream 20–30 minutes beforehand.
  2. Cocktail design based on prior diagnosis.
  3. Microinjections into the face, neck, and/or décolleté with a very fine needle or cannula.
  4. Post-session: slight redness, possible micro-bumps that disappear within hours, occasional small bruising.

A complete session lasts 30–45 minutes. You can return to work or social life immediately.

Indicative Price

At Santé, facial mesotherapy with vitamins has an indicative price from €250 per session, with specific packs for complete protocols. The diagnostic consultation is free and allows for defining a personalized plan and exact cost.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does facial mesotherapy hurt?

It is quite bearable thanks to the anesthetic cream. The most common sensation is very brief “prickles.”

How long do the results last?

After a complete protocol of 3 sessions, results are maintained for 4 to 6 months. With maintenance sessions, they can be prolonged indefinitely.

At what age can I start?

From 25–30 years of age as a preventive treatment. But there are specific indications at any age if the skin needs hydration or radiance.

Can I combine it with botox or hyaluronic acid?

Yes. Facial mesotherapy is one of the treatments that combines best with practically everything. During the consultation, we design the order and separation between treatments.

Are there any risks?

It is a very safe treatment when performed by medical personnel. Side effects (redness, micro-bumps, minor bruising) are mild and transient.
